Life Cover

Frequently asked questions

Your questions answered

Here you’ll find answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about our Life Cover.

Difference between Term Life insurance and Whole of Life insurance?
Term Life Insurance provides protection for a specific period of time. Our minimum term is five years and our maximum is 70 years. As its name suggests, Whole of Life Insurance provides protection for your entire life.
Can the level of cover change over the life of the plan?

There are three different types of cover. Here’s how each of them can change.

  • Level Life Cover - this type of cover amount stays the same over the life of your plan. It will only change if something happens, for example you make a claim or change the cover.
  • Indexed Life Cover - this type of cover amount is designed to protect against rises in the cost of living, so your cover amount will rise each year at your plan anniversary, in line with the Retail Prices Index (RPI). However, your premium will increase by a little more than the RPI each year at your plan anniversary to reflect your increasing age.
  • Decreasing Life Cover - this type of cover goes down over the life of your plan. It’s designed specifically to cover the reducing amount you owe on a mortgage. So the amount you're covered for goes down each year, but the premium stays the same. For cover designed specifically for mortgages, look at our Mortgage Plus Plan

What are the minimum monthly premium and minimum cover amount?

The minimum monthly premium for life insurance at VitalityLife is £8 and the minimum cover amount is £10,000. However, the level of cover you’ll get for £8 a month will depend on your age; height and weight; whether or not you smoke; general health and your medical history.

Do premiums stay the same for the life of the policy?

It depends on the choices you make. For example, if you add Vitality Optimiser to your plan and:

  • you stay on Bronze status, your premiums will go up by 2% each year.
  • you reach Silver status, your premiums will go up by 1% each year.
  • you reach Gold status, your premiums will stay the same each year.
  • you reach Platinum status, your premiums will go down by 1% each year.

Similarly, if you choose reviewable premiums, we would review your premiums regularly and potentially change them. If your premium needs to change as a result of a review, we’ll tell you at least a month in advance and explain your alternative options.

Your premiums will also change if you make any changes to your policy.

If the benefits for any of your covers are indexed, we’ll increase your premiums annually. The amount by which we will increase your premiums will depend on your age at the time your covers increase. For joint life plans, this is based on the age of the younger person covered.

How long should I take out life insurance for?

It’s entirely up to you. We offer a minimum term of five years and a maximum term of your entire life, with Whole of Life insurance. Before you decide, we recommend you talk to a VitalityLife Adviser, so that they can design a plan around what works specifically for you.

Can I change my policy later?

Yes. If your circumstances change you can increase your cover or buy extra policies. You can also choose to add indexation to your plan at no extra cost. Indexation protects you against rises in the cost of living, making sure you always keep the level of cover you need and increases your cover each year without the need to go back through our application process. You can also choose to opt out of any future increases.

Can I tailor my policy?

You can add or remove a whole series of additional covers and options at any time.

Will my family have to pay tax on my life insurance payout after I die?

Life insurance payouts are not usually subject to income or capital gains tax. However, your family may be liable for inheritance tax (IHT) if HM Revenue & Customs considers the life insurance payout to be part of your estate. It’s possible to avoid IHT by placing your life insurance policy in a trust, but it’s important you talk to a qualified financial adviser before doing this.

What’s the difference between life insurance and life assurance?

There isn’t a difference. Life insurance is the common term used to describe both.

Can I add Critical Illness Cover?

We don’t offer Critical Illness Cover. We offer Serious Illness Cover, which is different in two important ways:

  • With Serious Illness Cover, you’re up to twice as likely to get a payout than you are from a typical critical illness policy. This is because we cover over four times more conditions and cancers than any critical illness policy currently available in the UK1.
  • Serious Illness Cover pays out differently. It gives you a percentage of your cover amount based on the severity of your condition. This means we’re able to pay out on a wider range of illnesses - not just the debilitating or life-threatening ones covered by typical critical illness policies.
With us, you can include Serious Illness Cover with Life Cover or take it on its own. The level of Serious Illness Cover you’ll need depends on a few things, so we recommend talking to a VitalityLife adviser first.

Estimates are based on Hannover Re UK Life Branch’s interpretation of the general population incidence rates and their estimated view of future trends. Incidence rates for the entire population may be different to those lives that take out life insurance products. The typical critical illness product is a comprehensive one and covers most conditions seen in the market. VitalityLife estimates are based on the VitalityLife Plan with Comprehensive Serious Illness Cover. Estimates are based on the likelihood of making a claim before age 65.

How’s your life insurance different?

Our Life Cover is independently rated 5-star by Defaqto. Unlike other providers, our Comprehensive Serious Illness Cover protects against over four times more illnesses and cancers than traditional critical illness policies in the UK1.

With the Vitality Optimiser added to your plan, we’re also the only UK life insurer to reward you for staying healthy, with deals and discounts from major UK brands like Virgin Active, Cineworld, Vue Cinema and British Airways, as well as a non-smoker’s cashback. With the Vitality Optimiser, you also get an upfront premium discount of up to 47%, depending on your age and term selected.

Why should I buy life insurance?

It depends on where you are in life. However, for many people, life insurance is an excellent way to protect the things that mean the most to you – such as making sure your family’s financial future is more secure if something unexpected happens to you.

When it comes to our life insurance, we don’t just help you when things go wrong. We also help you live life well, by rewarding you for getting active and staying healthy.

If I switch to VitalityLife how do I cancel my other policy?

You’ll need to call your current provider to tell them you don’t need the policy any more. However, to make sure you stay covered, please don’t cancel your old policy until your VitalityLife policy is fully set up.

How long does it take to apply?

If you don’t need a medical, we can complete your application on the same day. If you do need a medical, it can take a bit longer, up to a few days. Just so you know, to make sure we get as much of the information we need in one call, your over-the-phone application with one of our advisers may take up to an hour.

If you need to have a medical or provide us with more information, you can speed up the process by asking us to send all the documentation via email.

Can I do the application in less than an hour?

Not really, so it’s best to allow at least an hour. That way we can be sure to complete the application properly.

Do I need to have a medical if I buy life insurance from you?

Not necessarily, but you must tell us about any medical conditions as part of your application. If you don’t suffer from any conditions you may not need to have a medical. Ask your VitalityLife adviser for more information.

How can I keep my premiums down?

As life insurance premiums are generally based on age and health, the younger you are when you buy a policy, the lower premiums will be.

If you add the Vitality Optimiser to your policy, you can also qualify for an upfront premium discount of between 5% and 25% for Term Life insurance and between 25% and 47% for Whole of Life insurance. Then, depending on how active you are, your premium will either go up by 2% if you stay on Bronze status; go up by 1% if you reach Silver status; stay the same, if you reach Gold status; or go down by 1%, if you reach Platinum status.

With the Vitality Optimiser, you also save money by getting partner discounts and rewards, such as 50% off Virgin Active monthly gym fees (a joining fee does apply1); a weekly cinema ticket at either Vue or Cineworld2; up to 40% off British Airways UK and European flights, including all taxes and charges, and many more.

1The gym discount applies to flexible individual monthly memberships. Gym joining fees are up to £50 for all clubs other than Classic Collection clubs, where joining fees are up to £150. The gym offer does not apply to Chiswick Riverside Virgin Active club.

2The cinema offer applies at Vue and Cineworld with a maximum of one ticket per week per person covered on the plan. The cinema offer excludes 3D films.

How much cover do I need?

When deciding how much cover you need, it’s a good idea to think about:

  • How much is left to pay on your mortgage?
  • How much other debt do you have?
  • How much do you need to pay for your children’s future education?
  • How much would your loved ones need to maintain their lifestyle if you weren’t around?

Your VitalityLife adviser can give you more advice and help calculate the cover you might need.  Alternatively, use our Protection Calculator to get a basic idea.

How do you work out the price of my life insurance?

Your premiums are based on lots of things, such as your age, height and weight; your health; whether you’re employed in a high-risk occupation; and whether you smoke.

What happens if I miss a premium payment?

If you don’t pay a premium by the due date, we stop all cover on your plan. However, you can ask us to reinstate your plan within 13 months of the date of the first unpaid plan premium as long as:

  • You pay all the outstanding premiums. If your premium goes up in the time that you have not been paying it, you’ll need to pay the increased rate.
  • You provide us with a new direct debit instruction so we can collect future premiums.
  • You and any other person covered by the plan completes a reinstatement application form. This is so that we can underwrite your request. We may offer you revised terms, or decline your request. We will not ask for evidence for any children covered by the plan. However, if your plan is reinstated, we will not pay any child’s claim for a condition that was pre-existing at the time of reinstatement.

If you do miss a payment, call our Customer Service team on 0845 601 0072 as soon as you realise. We’re open Mon – Thurs, 8:30am – 6pm, Fri, 8:30am – 5pm and closed Sat & Sun. Unless indicated, all lines are closed on public holidays.

I'm a smoker. Will this affect my life insurance?

Yes. Due to the link between smoking and a large number of health problems, a smoker is very likely to pay more for life insurance than a non-smoker. If you smoke, it’s important that you tell us, as we may carry out random checks.

If you’d like to stop smoking, we offer our customers a free stop smoking programme with our partner Allen Carr.
