08 April 2025

Health-related stressors hindering productivity

Stress and management of workload have been identified as some of the biggest factors impacting the productivity of the tech and IT sector.

New data from Vitality reveals that four in five (84%) SME employees in the sector experience health-related stressors that hinder their productivity, with one in three (31%) impacted by an inability to manage their work life balance.

Other factors impacting productivity and driving stress include mental health concerns, which one in five employees saying it affects them, and over a quarter (27%) specifically calling out burnout.

Equally, when looking at the physical health concerns that impact employee’s productivity, 17% highlighted not being able to exercise and 14% flagged musculoskeletal concerns. Both issues can be prevented through the introduction of appropriate benefits and targeted interventions and employee support programs.

Vitality has previously shown the impact health and wellbeing has productivity, with Vitality’s most recent Britain’s Healthiest Workplace report finding that an employee at risk of depression is estimated to lose 151% more productive time and physically inactive employees losing 28% more productive time, on average compared to those not at risk. However, loss of productivity due to health and wellbeing issues can be prevented when businesses offer the right support for their employees.

Athos Rushovich, Director of Health Distribution at Vitality said " Our health is closely entwined with what we do and how we behave, having a significant impact on how we work, and how productive we can be.

“With a productivity crisis affecting most businesses across the UK, including the tech and IT sector, there is much to be gained from prioritising and better understanding employee health.

“Furthermore, there is also much that can be done about it, and by understanding your individual workforce, you can put in interventions that make a big impact quickly.”

As part of its health insurance, Vitality offers access to a unique set of benefits that reward people when they are active. Employees also have access to mental health support, and a programme of health and wellbeing content and classes to support better health and wellbeing.
